My 5 Year Career Development Action Plan

Updated: Nov 11, 2021

Statement of artistic vision:

In my opinion, the entire point of theatre is to reflect life, and to bring issues that are relevant to light, enabling contemplation and discussion. Thus, based on this definition, good theatre causes the audience members to walk out with a changed or challenged opinion. Minds can be changed with theatre, and one of its purposes can be to address issues that are touchy or taboo in nature. I envision a Singapore that portrays important social issues and tackles it head on. This ensures that open communication and debate of the topic at hand is an option, stripping them of their taboo nature; which is the first step to real change in this country. There are many social issues in Singapore, such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia just to name a few. I believe that it can be handled much more productively by first removing the taboos and stigmas around it. One can show the public its reflection in the mirror with theatre, thereby forcing them to be analytical and reflect on its current state of being and rectifying issues one by one.

Short, medium, and long term goals and strategies:

When I begin embarking on this industry, I intend to start with the local theatre companies. I would like to work on projects with local theatre companies like Wi!d Rice, Pangdemonium, SRT, and so on, to immerse myself in the local theatre scene, and understand what state it is in at that point of time. From there, I would use the connections I have made with my time in these companies to locate and push myself towards the projects that have a potential to bring up certain social issues. I would then actively try to participate in these projects and bring them to life. Around the 5-year mark, I hope to be commissioning work, to perhaps even produce less well known pieces that have a significant value to change the general opinion of these “taboo” topics.
